Why Wood Floors Fail in Ghana’s Conditions — and How We Prevent It
Wood floors fail here for one underlying reason: moisture movement. Timber is hygroscopic — it takes up and gives off moisture with the air and the slab, swelling and shrinking as it does. Lay a wood floor over a damp slab or one without a working damp-proof membrane and it absorbs moisture from below and cups or lifts. Lay it tight to the walls with no expansion gap and, when it swells in the humid season, it has nowhere to go and buckles. And lay boards that were never acclimatised and they gap as they dry to the room. These are the three failures we are most often called to fix.
We engineer them out. We moisture-test the subfloor and confirm the damp-proof membrane, choose engineered board whose cross-bonded core resists movement far better than solid timber, acclimatise the boards in the room before laying, and leave the correct expansion gap at every perimeter and upstand. Stability in this climate is a specification and detailing decision, not a hope.

Is engineered hardwood better than solid wood in Ghana’s humidity? For most interiors here, yes — its cross-bonded core is far more dimensionally stable than solid timber, so it is much less prone to the seasonal gapping and cupping our humidity causes, while still giving a genuine wood surface that can often be re-sanded.
Why do wood floors gap, cup or lift? Moisture and expansion gaps — wood over a damp slab cups or lifts; wood laid tight with no expansion gap buckles; un-acclimatised boards gap. We moisture-test, confirm the DPM, acclimatise and leave the correct gap.
Can engineered hardwood be re-sanded? Usually once or twice depending on the wear-layer thickness. A thicker wear layer can be sanded and refinished; a thin veneer cannot. We advise on the right wear layer for your use.
