Suspended floors in Ghana are unique. It is a ground floor with a void underneath the structure. Unlike standard ground floor constructions in Ghana, suspended floors are not sitting directly on the ground.
This allows air flow and ventilation to prevent the mould and dry rot that would otherwise occur over damp ground.
Can you
concrete a suspended floor?
Many buildings in Ghana with suspended timber floor suffer from rot and insect attack in the ground floor timbers due to poor sub floor ventilation.
So, in many cases the floor timbers and joists become so badly damaged you may feel the only answer is to replace the damaged timber floor with a concrete floor.
Solid floors are a lot more substantial and require the ground to be made up in layers of ground sub base, sand, compacted hard core, damp proof membrane, insulation and concrete.
Suspended floors are normally made up of 2 materials, either timber joists or a concrete beam system

Timber Floor Joists
Many old houses in Ghana were designed with suspended timber floors. These were designed into houses to keep them dry (at the expense of draughts). The timber joists and floor boards were vented underneath at the front and back of the house to allow a draught to whisk away any rising moisture from the foundations.
Insulating a suspended timber floor in Ghana can eliminate floor draughts and reduce heat loss through the fabric of the floor at the same time.
From a thermal comfort perspective, it does appear that feet are particularly sensitive to colder temperatures, so addressing floor draughts can help improve comfort levels.
